Dan & Moxy switched off who was opening and closing each night, I believe, and on this night, Dan played first. Taper notes: As a companion to BARN110 -- the Dan Bern show from 1/2/99, BARN111 features Moxy Fruvous' sets from the same night. Moxy and Dan were co-billed for a 3 night New Years' Eve (+ Jan 1 and 2) run at the esteemed (though slightly loved and mostly hated at the same time) Bottom Line. They alternated who opened and who closed each night, and on this night Dan played first and Moxy got to close each set. Though I'd heard their "My Baby Loves A Bunch Of Authors" and "Jockey Full Of Bourbon" in very regular rotation as a listener of WFUV here in NYC, this was my first and only time seeing this band live. I went to this show as a Dan Bern fan, and got the Moxy sets as a bonus. I really enjoyed seeing this band, and even though I don't believe I have ever listened to this recording since the night I recorded it (until now, that is), I still had very clear memories to this day of the chemistry and pure joy this band brought to the stage -- as much for the music they performed as the hilarious stage banter between the members and chemistry they had with each other. Frankly if this band didn't have a career in music, these Canadians would have made a great comedy troupe -- a la "The State" or "The Kids In The Hall", or "Stella". Just a short listen to most of the (often rather lengthy, sometimes as long as the music surrounding) banter is sure to get you giggling in your seat! Track 3 in the early show is a perfect example -- where they dish on the poor reviews they've gotten in the media, particularly the preview of this show they got in the then-new "Time Out New York" magazine. Or hilariously referring (in the early show) to Dan Bern as "Dan Burns", Scottish singer. They of course knew his real name -- but they played it so straight, eventually a Dan Bern fan in the audience felt the need to yell out and correct them! During some of their late show banter they jokingly riff on some of Dan's songs. But really, any of the banter makes for good entertainment. How to describe them? Well, there are songs with keys, banjos, guitars, bass, congas (but no kit drums), accordion, a capella tunes -- some very political, some extremely comedic ("The King Of Spain"), some very happy/poppy, some dirge-like, some made up right on the spot, and a few covers -- a spot-on version of The Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer" an at-least-as-good-as-the-original cover of Tom Waits' "Jockey Full Of Bourbon", and funky versions of Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs And Ham" (a decade before it was trendy for bands to release kids' records), the original "Spiderman" theme, and The Searchers' "Love Potion No. 9" with a crazy mashup of other tunes in the middle. This was the only night of the 3 night run that I made it to, unfortunately. I went to Phish at MSG on New Years' Eve, and then to see local heroes (at the time) Deep Banana Blackout play 2 1/2 more sets after Phish at Wetlands -- and that show probably ended sometime between 6 and 8AM, which led to me sleeping most of the day away on Jan 1, and there was no way I was making it out to The Bottom Line for that show. But, I HAD to motivate on Jan 2....so this was the only one of the run I got to see. Again, this BARN is dedicated to Alex Prestin, who specifically asked me about this recording 2 summers ago at moe.down. He said that even though we didn't know each other back then, he recalled seeing a pair of Neumann TLM170s set up at this show and figured all these years later they must have been mine. And he was right! So it just goes to show that I do take into account all requests -- even if it takes me 2 1/2 years to get around to them. :) FYI, Moxy Fruvous served as the backing band for Dan for a significant portion of his late show, so go check it out here: http://www.archive.org/details/danbern1999-01-02.tlm170.flac16 This band broke up more than 10 years ago and you can't see them anymore, so I hope you enjoy this little bit of history.
