Original master recording: Neumann TLM-170 (30' split cardoids) -> Sonosax -> Teac DAP20 (m) DAT playback: Sony R500 -> Sound Devices 722 digital input (@24/48) Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0c - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits*. Time aligned L/R channels (removed about 300 samples from the left channel), then sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. 24 bit file then processed with SOX 14.3.1 (as recommended, keeping the file at 24 bits during the processing) to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter. Then back to Soundforge for volume normalization and dithering to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, with high dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.

I have copied the right over that spot to mask the issue -- it's hardly noticeable. Strangefolk, Deep Banana Blackout, Percy Hill, The Radiators, John Scofield played earlier; Govt Mule & Project Logic played later. I have posted the Project Logic set here: http://www.archive.org/details/projectlogic1999-06-20.tlm170.flac16 Taper notes: It's been a long while since I had a new moe. entry in the BARN series, so for BARN76 I thought it was high time for me to get another one of my favorite moe. shows out there. Abandoning my previous moe.thodology of going through my moe. recordings chronologically and getting the shows out there that weren't already circulating, I pulled out this set just because whenever it gets close to summertime and the Gathering Of The Vibes festival lineup is announced, I think back to this AWESOME moe. set from GOTV 1999. This is definitely in my "top 10" favorite moe. shows of all time. What's so great about it? Well, let's start with the guests -- DJ Logic & Nate Wilson. These are no ordinary special guests who are featured for one song, take a smokin' solo, and then go away. The super-talented Nate Wilson (ex of Percy Hill) really integrates himself into the band for the entire show (save 1 or 2 songs) and makes significant contributions all over the place. DJ Logic -- what can you say about him? He doesn't necessarily get to lead any of the jams here, but his contributions add a little extra spice and kick each of the jams up a notch, inspiring the band to break out of their usual modes and expand the jams into new and different places. Setting the scene a bit, this show was on a beautiful hot day in the middle of a summer where the band was busy in the studio recording and wasn't touring at all -- they just did a couple of one-off gigs here and there. So they were tight from the studio work, but their playing was fresh as they weren't tired or burned-out from being on the road. Let's get to the music -- if you come to this show looking for country-ish hoedown music which they sometimes play, this is not the show for you (though you do get just a taste of that with a short but sweet almost-acoustic "Blue Eyed Son"). No, what you get out of this show is in-your-face huge jamming from the band -- right out of the gate with a 40 minute tour-de-force of moe.'s most "throw caution to the wind" jamming. The Moth gets wild and crazy pretty quickly, and finds itself in that territory where (and I remember turning to Pete Costello who noted this to me at the show) moe. is actually playing 2 songs at once -- there was a short period of time during the transition where they were playing BOTH Moth and Meat at the same time! (OK, it's not too difficult with those 2 songs since they almost share a bassline at one point) Anyway, this combo jumps you right into the deep end, and though it took Steve Young a while (nearly 10 minutes) to get both DJ Logic and Nate Wilson audible at the correct volumes, they both contribute heavily to the craziness. Other highlights include a powerful "Plane Crash" with a bit of a Latin-flavored jam, a version of "Bring It Back Home" that (even though it's much-maligned and one of the songs I was not particularly psyched to hear) is unique and holds its own among the other great stuff in this set. At the end of the set Al explains to us that they had a bunch of new tunes to debut for us but they "spent too much time wanking off on the old ones" and ran out of time. Oh well...They would go on to premiere "New York City", "The Ghost Of Ralph's Mom", and "Can't Seem To Find" at their next show (Woodstock 99) but didn't occur for until one month later. Closing the proceedings with a smokin' version of my all-time favorite moe. song, "Rebubula" (always made that much better when it's outdoors on a hot day in the sun) ends things on a great note. (As a bonus, my recording of the very tasty Project Logic "tweener" set which followed moe.'s set on this day was on the same DAT tape so it got to come along almost for free for the ride. Look for it as BARN77.) Enjoy!
