Taper Notes:
View NotesThis is a good audience recording of a fine show from the Fall 1998 tour. Everybody seems relaxed and in a good mood, and even the guy who keeps shouting "Standby!" ends up being more amusing than annoying. One big highlight is a very rare "Last Breath" -- I don't know how many times this has been played, but it can't have been very many. Peter D. taped this and did a nice job, made all the more impressive that he had to do it clandestinely: Low allows taping, but the Bowery Ballroom did not, at least at the time. (Which is absurd -- artists, NOT venues, are the ones who should set that policy.) Apparently someone was busted for taping just a few feet from him! A tiny piece of "Transmission" was lost to a post-concert mishap (hitting record instead of play), but other than that, the music's all there. Richard L. transferred this to CDR back a month or two after it was recorded, using (I believe) a first-gen copy. When I prepared these FLACs, I noticed a few things worth cleaning up. First was the tape speed -- about 40 cents too slow; the concert sounds appreciably better at the correct pitch. There were also a couple funky glitches at track transitions between songs 4-7 -- about 80-200ms of material was repeated, and needed to be removed. It should sound seamless now. Other than that, and a quick fade at the end of the show, I've made no changes to the audio. Once again, huge thanks to Peter D. for documenting this great early Low show!
