An interesting show from the Summer 1995 tour, with a few unusual twists. First off is the recording itself -- definitely a soundboard, and apparently taped to cassette. Unfortunately, it's quite hissy -- not horribly so, but enough to be distracting at times, especially over headphones. I assume this problem is on the master, as the levels on my cassette are reasonable (if a bit low). Otherwise, the sound is pretty good, and surprisingly well-balanced for a soundboard. The show opens with "Rope" -- a great song that's never been played very much, though you can find it on the "Anthony, Are You Around?" CD. Material from the first few albums follows, including the beautiful "Alone" (the beginning of which is missing here, probably due to a tape flip). Earlier in the day at No Life Records, Alan had played a few chords from an unreleased/unfinished song fragment (at the end of "Words"). At the end of this set at Spaceland, immediately after "Fear", Alan plays it again, this time singing along. Since there's no known title, I've named it for its lyrics: "I Can't Lose You". I hope someday this song is completed and released -- it's only a few seconds long, but I think it's beautiful. After all, "Two-Step" started out in much the same way, as can be heard on the March 1, 1995 show... A video recording of this show was also made, and a few people have copies, though I do not. Thanks to B.D.G. for sharing his tape!

One of my all-time favorite Low shows, this is a beautiful in-store set played to a quiet and attentive audience. There were some volume and mic noise problems during "Over the Ocean", which have been cleaned up as best as possible. Otherwise, the sound is near-perfect. And so is the performance -- lots of beautiful Long Division material. There's a special treat at the end of "Words", when Alan plays a few chords from an unreleased/unfinished song fragment. At the end of their set at Spaceland later that day, Alan played it again, this time singing along. Since there's no known title, I've named it for its lyrics from the evening performance: "I Can't Lose You". I hope someday this song is completed and released -- it's only a few seconds long, but I think it's beautiful. After all, "Two-Step" started out in much the same way, as can be heard on the March 1, 1995 show... There were two other people recording at this show, one to cassette and one to video. The video recording was recently transferred to DVD, using the audio from this DAT source, and torrented on Dimeadozen.org; the results are well worth seeking out.
