Taper Notes:
View NotesThis recording from an in-store performance has rather poor sound quality. Flaws include hiss, volume fluctuations, a near-total lack of high end, occasional little "pops" in the right channel, and a strange mix in which the taper appeared to be close to Alan's guitar, which is usually louder than everything else. I can't figure out what equipment would have been used to get the weird, brittle sound of this recording. Allegedly the master may have been a DAT, but that's very hard to believe! On the other hand, it's one of the first gigs after John left the band and Zak joined, and it's got a rare performance of "Take" (unfortunately cut at the end) and a snippet of "Two-Step" years before it officially premiered. The taper changed the recording levels several times during the show (out of fear of distortion), resulting in some big swells/cuts that happen mid-song. I've done what I can to mitigate the worst volume changes, which inevitably makes the hiss levels fluctuate, but I think it's worth it. Haven't done anything about the little "ticks" that crop up here and there, though; they sound analog and aren't too offensive. This is probably for completists only, but after over a decade of sitting around on my hard drive, I thought I ought to share it. If you can put on your "bootleg ears" it's actually not too bad, especially now that the volume changes have been addressed -- and no matter what, we're grateful to the taper for documenting this show.
