View NotesNotes: This was recorded live on 3/29/94 at an in-store performance at Brass City Records in Waterbury, CT. It was produced on recordable CDR, and there are rather abrupt two-second gaps between all tracks. The quality of the recording itself is very good, with all instruments and voices coming through quite nicely, despite a constant mild tape hiss. On the other hand the CD is mastered very "hot" (the levels are very high), and there is sometimes mild digital distortion on the louder parts, though nothing too objectionable. Five of the tracks suffer from some form of digital error, mostly very mild: Cut has a skip at 1:35 and a digital "pop" at 7:18; Lazy has pops at 2:24, 2:49 and 4:48; Slide has a mild digital pop and "stutter" (split-second repetition) at 2:41; Down has a digital pop/stutter at 4:47 and a pop at 7:08; and Fear has a pop/stutter at 1:29. The first note of Down cuts in slightly, and the end of Down contains some talking by Alan that's repeated at the beginning of Fear. Despite these problems, however, the CD is quite good. The audience is quite respectful and attentive, and Alan expresses his thankfulness for this throughout the CD. The performance is excellent, with the extended version of "Down" being a particular treat. It's also one of only three live recordings in circulation which feature John Nichols on bass. "Talking About Duluth", by the way, is a few minutes of Alan responding to a question about the music scene in that town. An original copy of this will be pretty much impossible to find, but CDR clones and tape copies are in wide circulation. There is also a "remastered" version floating around that has had some of the digital clicks and skips cleaned up. This version will have slightly different running times for a couple tracks, especially Down and Fear, which have been seamlessly edited together.
