Taper Notes:
View NotesThis tape was received from Brian St. Clair in December 2018. These are very early work-in-progress "live demos" of songs that later appeared on the releases "The Half-Life EP" (2001), "Here Comes The Zoo" (2002), "The No Fun EP" (2003) & "ninety-nine-double-oh demos" (2006). The band recorded the tape live in their practice space in October, 1999 as they were putting the songs together and writing lyrics. I played the tape side A to side B and some earlier takes include more fully formed lyrics (ie: "Creature Comforted") than the 2nd or 3rd takes. Im not sure if one was recorded one week prior than the other or vice versa, but its worth noting when you listen front to back. Scott does mumble through a lot of the songs as they still are without lyrics in certain sections (mostly the verses). I do not know the specific recorder that was used by the band, but the sound is the equivalency of a boombox tape. It is a very rough listen, but its also very fun to hear the songs as they were literally being constructed. You will actually hear the moment Brian wanted to use the cowbell at the beginning of "Stick To What You Know" (track 15), as well as some of the drum fills that were prevalent so early. Another humorous moment is hearing the original lyrics to "Halcyon Daze" as "Have It Your Way", which was a Burger King commercial in the 1970s, was it not? Well, it worked -- sorta. I also found it very interesting many songs were missing from the tape that were played on tour that fall except for "(Baby Wants To) Tame Me". The majority of these songs did not start appearing in live sets until 2000 or 2001. Some even later than that. "Payback Is A Mother" (for instance) was never officially released and was not played live until 2005. It was later released on the 99-00 demos CD by the band in 2006. Considering Brian St. Clair joined the band in August 1999 and this was less than 2 months later speaks volumes of the material that was being written and played during their rehearsals. We all know there was so much more than this (most of which ended up on "Here Comes The Zoo"), but popping this tape in my deck in 2018 and getting a tiny snapshot into the band's creative process during this prolific era is absolutely invaluable.
