The Nightbreak was just an amazing place to see a band, especially Kai Kln, because the stage was only about two feet high and the narrow shape of the room made it always feel packed. Kai Kln seemed to have an extra strong draw in that part of SF anyway and they packed the house on 6-27-92. I lived on Haight near Masonic (just above Pipedreams head shop) and packed my Sony two-track, Tascam 4-track, PZM mics, and a vocal mic into backpacks for the short walk down to the club. I set up early on the right (band's left) on the stage. I taped the 20' cords down and set up a stereo PZM recording of the drum kit. The vocal mic was taped down to Genes vocal monitor, and I mixed it as best I could with the PZM room sound. The vocals are a bit quiet throughout, but the EQ on the vocals was so tinny that too much from that ruined the room sound. All in all, the recording is a bit hollow and for all the equipment, time and work put into it, a bit disappointing. However, a show this hot could never be disappointing, and the lower-fi sound reminds the listener of that sweaty, cramped, drunken, party atmosphere that the show had. People danced and banged their heads in the best grunge ways as the band showered them in guitar-rock genius while pounding their nervous system into complete submission with the bass and drums theatrics! This is burned straight from my master tape. *Great to listen to with headphones and a good equalizer! The stereo separation is a treat! -Randall Mantei
