Setting the scene: I decided to hit a Radiators show at BB King's club in Times Square on this night. I was set up in the middle of the floor, audience taping for a good (if unmemorable) first set. Sure enough, Curtis Claymont, who was also there with me (but not taping) gets a phone call (how he got the call in BB King's, a basement club where cellphone reception is virtually impossible I'll never know) saying Trey was on his way over to The Lion's Den to play with the Jennifer Hartswick Band and that we had to pack up and leave immediately to make sure someone got it on tape. So, for the first time ever, I packed up my taping gear after the first set ended (there were other tapers there patched out of the soundboard) and we headed downtown to The Lion's Den. The place was absolutely electric and got sardine-like (at least near the stage) as the night progressed. You can hear the excitement in the crowd as the band returns for their 2nd set. Sure enough, the red-bearded-one himself did pop up onstage for the beginning of the 2nd set, absolutely blew the place up and blew us away for 50 minutes (2 songs, with "Night Speaks..." being 26+ minutes on its own) that he played with the band, and then made tracks out of the venue. Unfortunately when a special guests sits-in for the beginning of the 2nd set and then takes off, it's really hard to recover, and as soon as Trey left the stage, 90% of the people in the room emptied out, as did the energy. Picture a balloon popping very quickly as the place went from packed and ELECTRIC to nearly dead (note the lack of crowd on the songs after Trey left). Oh well. Still, the music was great, I had a GREAT time (despite the fact that this is from a time that I was personally anti-Phish and anti-Trey) -- all thanks go out to Curtis and whoever called him to let him know to get down there! I was lucky enough to see Phish in some small-ish places as they were coming up, and I have been lucky to see various Phish member sit in at other small shows, but this stands out as the smallest place I've ever seen Trey play in. I hope you all enjoy this spectacular recording of a smokin' performance 7 1/2 years (update: now 16+ years) later!!! Thanks to Curtis for apparently lending me his Sonosax & AD2K as I believe my Apogee was in the shop for repair on this night. For anyone who is not aware, The Lion's Den was renamed (and spruced up a bit) "Sullivan Hall" on 1/1/08. I decided to pull this recording out of my archives after a conversation with Howie (who books Sullivan Hall) about how much fun this night was. Note that the version of "Mr. Completely" from this show gets a specific mention in the Phish Net song history database, here: http://phish.net/song/mr-completely/history "For a rocking live version in a more low-key setting, seek out recordings of the Jennifer Hartswick Band on 11/7/03 at The Lion’s Den in New York, with Trey sitting in on guitar."
