View Notes"This Darkness Got To Give". Here is one I recorded 30 years ago - the Grateful Dead at Deer Creek in Indiana on 7-2-95. The infamous gate crashers show. Listen during Desolation Row at about the point when Bobby is singing the "Cinderella she seems so easy, it takes one to know one she smiles" part. You will hear the crowd start to roar as ticketless people from outside the amphitheater start to tear down the privacy fence at the back of the lawn and run into the venue. I was in the tapers section with a rig borrowed from Matt Klaus, and I remember gate crashers barreling through the section trying to avoid security. As things unfolded outside the venue you could hear tear gas being shot off and a helicopter hovered with a spotlight on the revelers. Crazy shit. Here is some video footage and television news coverage of the event: https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=abGdwZM-MkE&fbclid=IwY2xjawLSg0lleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETFTWktjajd0b1liS3VlaG5BAR5In2g91C9sxsT2fsn9KuPfsNREH-O42BdFztYNBg-lppXrnXIzR5k1EoO8sg_aem_C0lraq20SPUBPa1tr_-w3A Here is the "This Darkness Got to Give" letter the Dead gave out in St. Louis regarding the gate crashers and riot: https://www.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/comments/zhfivd/open_letter_from_the_grateful_dead_to_deadheads/#lightbox We were camped just down the road with a St. Louis contingent at Glowood Campground. The next morning we started hearing that the second night at Deer Creek was going to be canceled due to the riot that happened the night before. Most of us didn't have anywhere to be until 2 days later when they were to play in St. Louis, so we stayed over in the campground the night of the canceled show. The boys from Blue Dixie had their van with a PA from a recent show, so they set it up in the campground and we played back Jeff Hersch's previous night's recording through the PA for the campground to hear. The playback started right around scheduled showtime, we had a set break, and we ended up with a big crowd of campers gathered around dancing to the previous night's recording. We even had a couple guys come over with a mic stand and record the recording of the show. Ha! There are better copies of this one out on archive.org but I wanted a trip down memory lane so I went ahead and transferred mine. As with many of the '95 shows there are some rough moments in this performance. Unfortunately, the end was near.
