View NotesThis is a remastered version of a previously archived recording, the original version can be found at this link: http://www.archive.org/details/gpn2008-02-21.aud.flac16 This concert was easily my favorite of the five GPN shows I've attended to date, and the gorgeous Lincoln Center venue and exceptionally quiet audience inspired a superbly nuanced performance by Grace and the boys. I thought the evening was special enough to warrant spending some time using the pro quality mastering software I've acquired since taping it almost three years ago to make it sound a little closer to the way I remember it sounding from my seat in the middle of the 2nd row. There's obviously no way to overcome the limitations of the gear used to record the show, but I was able to compensate to some degree for the pronounced low and high frequency rolloff of the miniature AT-943 mics by equalizing the mid and side channels and applying Voxengo's bass enhancer, as well as restoring some of the presence of the concert by means of judicious multi-band compression. The result is a little more "oomph" in the bass and kick drum, a bit more air in the cymbals and guitar, and a more immediate soundstage throughout. While I think the result sounds significantly better than the undoctored version, I've also left my original minimally processed recording available for the purists. Enjoy! View NotesABOUT THE GRACE POTTER LIVE REMASTER SERIES This is a series of remastered live recordings by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. The remasters are sourced from existing tapes, mostly from the Live Music Archive at www.archive.org. Since I'm not the original taper of these shows, all credits should go to the original tapers for making the recordings available in the first place. These remasters are an attempt to get the best out of the original recordings. The remasters will cover the entire career of what I think is one of today's finest live acts. As long as there's enough interest there will be a new release every few months. Suggestions for shows to be released in the series are always welcome, but keep in mind I can't release everything. NOTES Date: February 21 2008 Venue: The Allen Room, New York City Source: Audience Sound Quality (1-10): 10 The source for this remaster is Keith From NY's recording of the show as it appears on archive.org. The most obvious problems with the original recording were some clipping during the loud parts and a balance error (the right channel was obviously too loud). Some clipping restoration was used in Adobe Audition to make the louder bits somewhat less distorted. The clipping on the raw source was nothing terrible, but this restoration has made it all sound a bit more smooth. Adobe Audition was also used to correct the balance error. The EQ of the original source was already quite good, but HarBal 2.3's re-EQing still got a bit more out of the recording. The result is what I think a close to perfect version of one of the best audience recordings I ever heard. Listen to the sample below and decide for yourself. Artwork is included in the torrent. Enjoy! Note that I'm aware that Keith From NY also remastered this show himself. I didn't use that remaster as a source for the following reasons: - I preferred working with a raw source instead of with something that somebody else already has tried to fix, thereby remaining closer to the original source. - Keith From NY's remaster didn't fix the balance and clipping problems in the original recording - After applying the same remastering tools to Keith From NY's own remaster, the results didn't sound a lot different and certainly not any better. Therefore I decided to use the raw source instead, staying closer to the original recording.
