View NotesThe lights dim, and that ominous Dead Flag Blues/"the car is on fire" drone starts up, tickling your spine. There's no extra glitz, glamour or fanfare, just a ghostly drone and some empty chairs, amplifiers, about 300 guitar pedals and enough cable to circle the globe twice. Slowly but surely, one by one, each member appears out of the dark corners of the stage like an aberration and start's obsessively fiddling with their chosen instrument of noise, but beautiful noise it is. They start fucking with the knobs, strings, cymbals, screwdrivers and whatever the hell else they have sitting on stage, and things suddenly don't seem so bad. Your job might suck. Your friends might've blew you off and left you stranded. Maybe you missed the train and are now running late. Perhaps you had your heart broke by someone close. Or yet, maybe you're on that "heartbreak ridge" of whatever peak you're attempting to scale, and the last mile has turned into what feels like ten. Each step is heavier and slower than the last. You hate everything at that moment, but you know and realize you got to push on and keep going. Enjoy the misery, the suffering, the loneliness. You can still breathe. You might need to crawl through some crap, but who cares? It'll wash off. You can still stand. And so I did, just as Godspeed You! Black Emperor roared to life, with my head down leaned into the squall.
