Taper Notes:
View NotesI was on the second deck, right side of the stage (from the audience's perspective), almost all the way up front. The mic/recorder sat on the railing in front of me the whole time. I fiddled with it a few times throughout, but fortunately I couldn't hear most of it on the playback. This was my first recorded show, and overall I'm quite satisfied with how this recording turned out. I'm amazed that it sounds as clear as it does. The show itself was very loud, and I didn't know what to expect. Some of the dynamics heard here (especially Sophie's violin parts) actually sound better and more audible than they did to me in person. At first I thought the levels were actually too low (even after normalization), but now I'm not sure. My ears must be playing tricks on me. I also considered using a graphic EQ to take down the bass, but I decided that if I started messing with it I'd never be satisfied. Having never gotten to see Godspeed back in the day, this was absolutely a dream come true for me, and even if the perfectionist in me may find a few things in this recording to gripe about quality-wise, I honestly couldn't have asked for a better memento of such a wonderful night. I just wish they had played another song or two. Even at 2 hours 21 minutes, the night still felt too short to me. One more thing: as specified above, I recorded this show in 44.1 kHz/16 bit mode. At the time I didn't know 48 kHz/24 bit was the standard and was thinking in terms of CD audio. I hope no audiophiles will be put off by this.
