It is still quite listenable, and there doesn't seem to be any other source for it, unfortunately. As far as I can recall we were the only tapers present. At this point I was a lowly patcher and had no control over the taper whose microphones I was patched out of. I suspect he needed to turn the 10db pad on his Teac DAT on but did not. Taper Notes: Continuing my long-haul project of releasing my entire God Street Wine archive, I've hit the end of 1993 with this New Years' eve show at Wetlands for BARN129. Let's put this one in context -- the band had already outgrown Wetlands earlier in the year, having played (and sold out?) Irving Plaza 3 times (in addition to some secret Jon Bevo's Love Orchestra shows at the Nightingale Bar in July). Even though I was a frequent visitor to Wetland already by this point, and I'd seen the band a number of times now, I still hadn't seen them at Wetlands....so when they announced New Years' Eve at Wetlands, I HAD to be there. As it turned out, Phish also announced some New Years' shows -- a 4 show run from December 28th through 31st. I made my decision to catch the Phish shows on the 28th and 29th in Washington, DC and New Haven, CT, but instead of heading on to the Dec 30th show in Maine (which was a haul of a drive in itself) or the Dec 31st show in Boston, I decided to head back to NYC and rest up for GSW NYE at Wetlands! Of course as we all know, the 12/30/93 Phish show is now legendary as the best show in the run, but I am quite satisfied that I made a great decision. Yes I had a blast on 12/28 & 12/29 at Phish (though driving down to DC with Brendan O'Neill and friends in the back of his VW Microbus in the middle of a HUGE and treacherous snowstorm and making it JUST in time for the show was not exactly fun....), and I luckily got to see the return of Frank Zappa's "Peaches En Regalia", but I wanted my GSW!!! This 3 set GSW show is a classic -- an all acoustic 1st set, filled with covers (and it seems the only time they ever played the KD Lang song "Full Moon Full Of Love"), and then 2 long sets of smokin' GSW classics (including a power failure related to someone pulling a fire alarm in the venue!?). Setlist-wise, most of the treats in this show come in the acoustic set -- in addition to the KD Lang cover, we get an acoustic treatments of "Miss Leonardo" (a pretty obscure original), "Turn It Upside Down...", and "Waiting For The Tide", plus lots of covers -- "I've Found A New Baby", "Sneakin' Around With You", "Dear Prudence", and "Swing Low Sweet Chariot". NICE! Then we get 2 sets of GSW classics which were relatively typical for the time period, but really HOT, as the band was really playing at their peak at this time. The only true rarity in the electric sets we get here is the instrumental "Crazy Iranian". "Manatolking" is the centerpiece of the entire show (as it often was) with a huge jam in the middle. "Pussycat" is also a lot of fun in the first set. "Straight Line" (in the encore) was pretty rare as well, and a very welcome choice! Typical of Wetlands, it was PACKED and HOT in the venue (Lo mentions a few times about how we're all going to lose a couple of pounds by the end of the night). Unfortunately the recording is far from perfect. I was patched out of someone who did not have his recorder set correctly, and there is a bit of distortion throughout. It's very listenable, but not up to the superb quality of most of my recordings. As far as I can tell nobody else was recording, and there doesn't seem to be any other recording in circulation. So if you can overlook the slightly problematic recording, there is much joy to be had here! Enjoy!
