Show Notes: ROCK BOAT!!! This was another Vega Productions gig. Another school needed instruments and the crew came in to the rescue. 2 boats, 2 stages, 4 bands, 4 hours of fun. A semi-Big Wu opened for GJ and on the other boat Pert Near Sandstone opened for White Iron Band (Undie from WIB playing drums for Big Wu as well) AND Papa Mali sitting periodically as our guest skipper. Given the difficult setup I'm actually pretty happy with the sonics of my recordings on this boat (Wu and GJ) and a fun time was had by all. OK. A few disclaimers: This show has 3 noticable issues: First: Sometime while we were getting set up the engineer (our beloved Kevin Sinclair) was talking about how he was supposed to sit in during a song or two and couldn't mix and play at the same time. I mentioned that I could possibly babysit the board, he said hmm.. not a bad idea. SO the band gets up for their first song after change-over and sound check and I'm getting my recording all dialed in and there's a burst of feedback.. so I look back and no engineer and the lighting guy saying "Hey Nate, I think you're supposed to be mixing.." SO.. long story short I started mixing the show about half way through the first song. I continued mixing through the rest of the show looking a bit like a cyborg: 2 sets of headphones on my head. (one for soloing the board and the other for hearing my recording. SO the beginning sonics are a bit rough but smooth out over the first song or two. Second: This was a complicated room. Picture really long, short ceilings (I think 7'). Barely any good sound was actually making it back to where the board was BUT my mics flying overhead (about 6" off the ceiling) were grabbing the sound like they were hungry and not nearly as much crowd as I was expecting.. SO I literally mixed the show using the cans as a reference. You will still hear plenty of conversation and the sonics are a bit weird but the music cuts through rather well. Third: Now this is the one that got under my skin. Roughly half-way through the show BAM no PA. A Circuit had blown (the boat had only 15A circuits) I, having not been the one who built the system had no clue where the breakers were. I made it through the crowd to the stage to no avail then back to the bar in the middle of the boat where I did find the breakers. The damn bartenders first would barely talk to me "Can't you see we're working here!?!" then refused to touch the breaker "We're not allowed to touch that" and finally refused to let me back there. SO I went on a grand mission through the other boat to find the captain/manager who eventually made it down to the bar and flipped the lil breaker to give us power. The whole time the band had power for their instruments and same with the lights so they finished the song they were playing and even started another one. 7.5 minutes later we get P.A. back and the show goes on with me mixing quieter to reduce power draw. My pre-amp was plugged into the same power as the FOH board and so my laptop proceeded to record 7.5 minutes of dead silence. You will find this silence as track 7 on disc 1. arg. Enjoy! -Nate
