View NotesI scrubbed about 30 minor claps from this recording for all of our enjoyment Recorded, transferred (4/15/2012), tracked (11/22/2019), and mastered (11/23/2019), and posted (11/23/2019) by Scott Bernstein Taper notes: This is a cool recording I dug out of my archive for BARN195 -- a super tasty performance of the Benevento-Russo Duo, augmented by Mike Gordon on bass from the moe.down festival in 2004 (the 5th edition of their festival). At this time, Benevento-Russo (aka "The Duo") were one of the best things brewing out of NYC -- two amazing master musicians who wrote interesting jazz/alternative/jamming songs, and had so much incredible chemistry. This was long before they went off onto their own solo careers (Marco Benevento Trio, Joe playing as the drummer for Further), and then came back together to be the best band playing music from the Grateful Dead's repertoire as Joe Russo's Almost Dead (AKA JRAD). Also at the time, Phish was on hiatus, so Mike Gordon had some free time on his hands. I really can't recall how they hooked up to become a touring band (which eventually grew to include Trey Anastasio) -- but anyone who saw them in this configuration should consider themselves lucky. They are unlikely to ever tour in this configuration again, but we have our recordings of these shows to remember the music. Take a drums/organ duo that was already amazing, and sprinkle in a bassist who can easily hold his own in terms of improvisation and filling the empty spaces...and you get something truly breathtaking musically. The pinnacle of this performance is their cover of Yes' "Roundabout" -- it still sticks out in my memory of the show today (and is borne out by the recording) as being jawdropping. Also note that the usually chatty moe.down audience is silent for this performance, but you do hear a bit of a crowd reaction as they realize what is about to go down as they kick into Roundabout. This will take your breath away! Enjoy!
