The band just played a party on a boat, for 3 sets! The band: Marco Benevento - keyboards Joe Russo - drums Skerik - sax, vocals Mike Dillon - percussion, vibraphone, triangle, vocals Taper notes: I have been pulling out recordings from my vast archives and transferring and posting them for all sorts of reasons -- requests, random whims of shows/bands that popped into my head for whatever reason, favorite shows of all time, etc. Well, BARN167 comes to you for, among many reasons, being a LIFE CHANGING night for me personally. This was the concert that I attended and recorded and was fated to meet my future wife Jen Wysmuller at! Today, 7/1/2014, is our 7th wedding anniversary so it felt like an opportune time to unleash this BEAST of a show on the world that has not been heard by anyone who wasn't there since the night it happened. First off, let's talk about the setting -- a tiny boat, one of Jake Szufnarowski's Rocks Off Cruises -- a GENIUS idea that he started booking in the summertime not long before this concert, but after Wetlands (where he was one of the concert bookers) closed. What could be bad about getting off this HOT island and onto a boat on the river in the middle of the summer? Though, this was a particularly memorable night as (and as far as I can tell the only time this happened) the boat was having engine problems and was unable to leave the docks -- resulting in essentially a "party on a boat". This lead to a few other unique things about this cruise -- people could actually come and go from the show as they pleased...and the boat was not strictly limited to its strict 3 hour timeframe. Also, if I recall correctly we had a visit from the coast guard due to the noise/volume level of the performance. Now to the music -- this was a relatively unique pairing of Marco Benevento & Joe Russo ("The Duo") with eclectic musicians Skerik (sax, alumnus of Critters Buggin [side project of The New Bohemians], Tuatara [Peter Buck of REM's world music project], Garage A Trois [w/Stanton Moore & Charlie Hunter], Les Claypool's band) and Mike Dillon (also of Critters Buggin and sideman to "everyone"]), leading us to call this show "The Duo/Buggin'". Combining highlights of The Duo's repertoire with very varied covers, and songs that to this day I cannot tell if they were improvised on the spot, more covers or originals -- this band played soft, it played loud, and it played "balls out" (see Set 2 Track 3) with punk-like abandon -- some of the songs were melodic, and some of them not so much. All of these musicians (especially Joe Russo!) have since gone onto other things, but this is a snapshot of one crazy night. It also happened to be Marco Benevento's birthday. Getting back to the reason I've pulled this recording out NOW, I was at this show, taping in conjunction with all around good guy and taper buddy Curtis Claymont. For shows like this I would bring some long cables, clamp my mics to the overhang above the band and run the cables to the side of the boat, where I would camp out my gear in a little area on the side of the dancefloor, near the PA speaker on the left. Well, during the show, some young woman kept scooting her way past my gear, near the PA speaker to take pictures of Marco with her digital camera. Usually, I woudn't trust anyone getting so close to my gear (especially back then as my stuff was much more fragile than the gear I have now). Apparently her friend that had come to the show with Jen had taken off mid-set (since, well, you could with the boat in the docks), which left Jen free to shoot a lot of pictures. Well, anyway, come the end of the show she sits down in a chair nearby. I'm breaking down my stuff, unhanging the cables, etc., when Curtis and I start discussing our plans for my birthday show the next night -- my favorite band moe. in Atlantic City, NJ! So Jen gets up, and says she's going to the show as well, and we start talking about how moe. is her favorite band too. And then the conversation shifts to "I'm a huge moe. fan"...."I'm a huge moe. fan too"..."Oh yeah, I bet I'm a bigger moe. fan than you..." and so on. To this day, I think that question have never been settled as we are both huge moe.rons! Anyway, fast forward just about a day, and Jen managed to track me down in the tapers' section at the Borgata Casino Ballroom the following night, give me an "I (heart) moe." pin, and exchange phone numbers. So the story begins and continues to this day! I always say that Jen was the best Birthday gift I've ever gotten. :) And thanks to Curtis Claymont for driving down to Atlantic City the next day!!!
