There is some overloaded bass (coming from the stage PA) at the beginning of Miss You. There is also a fire alarm going off during part of "Miss You", but amazingly it's not so intrusive. Transferred, Mastered, and Tracked by Scott Bernstein (5/13-14/2010). Taper Notes: With BARN37, I officially inaugurate a series of New Orleans Jazzfest appreciation releases. 2010 Jazzfest has recently come and gone, and I figured it's time to step into the Bayou (avoiding the mosquitos and Neutra Rats) and pull some Jazzfest highlights out of my collection (and, later on, some recordings of favorite New Orleans Bands performing outside of the Crescent City as well). I thought this would be a great way to kick of my Jazzfest Appreciation series -- this was the closing show of Jazzfest 2008 at Tipitinas -- Sunday night of the 2nd weekend....everyone, of course, was DEAD tired, but Ivan Neville and the Dumpsta boys managed to put together an incredible show, even after their smokin' daytime set at the Fairgrouds. The first set was a bit shaky -- not in terms of performance, but in terms of sound mix -- particularly the band's monitor mix which they complained about endlessly -- you'll hear Ivan chiding the venue "It was more important to get the people in than to do a soundcheck?"! But still, you'd be hard pressed to find a funkier, hotter show from the weekend. Guests? We got 'em -- a horn section, Warren Haynes, Eric Krasno, George Porter, Terence Blanchard, Cyril Neville, June Yamagichi, Adam Deitch, Nigel Hall, and eventually a complete takeover of the stage by the band "Lettuce"! Unfortunately it was the end of a long weekend and my batteries just didn't cut it. I had already taped the opener (Joe Krown Trio with Walter Wolfman Washington, Russell Batiste, and Mike Gordon), and this LONG show (1 hour 1st set, 2+ hour 2nd set) was just longer than my lead acid batteries could handle. There was one other taper there (Eric Vandercar), but his batteries ran out too -- a little while after mine did, but still did not make it to the end. I personally made it to the end of the show, but just barely. Standing up was a chore by the time this marathon show ended! This is one of the last shows I recorded on DAT, as I bought my Sound Devices 722 hard disc-based recorder just over a month later. Now I can run for many many more hours at a time, but unfortunately I can't go back in time and recapture this one. :-( This show is dedicated to Kat Murphy who gently prodded me to get this show out there, indirectly inspiring me to start my little Jazzfest/New Orleans Music appreciation mini-series of BARNs. Look for other great N'Awlins music in the near future. Enjoy!
