I’ve loved the Neville Brothers — a family band of New Orleans royalty, for a long time. Ivan Neville is heir to that royalty as Aaron Neville’s son…he first released (and had a couple of minor hits) of his own in the mid-to-late 1980s and then went on to be a part of Keith Richards solo project "The X-Pensive Winos". Nowadays he is leading one of the best funk bands in the land, Dumpstaphunk. Before he got Dumpstaphunk off the ground he did a tour with one of George Porter’s projects (PBS - Porter/Batiste/Stoltz) in 2004. But before that happened, he did this one off gig in NYC in 2003 with what seems to be a group of guys who lived locally here in NYC — the material was full of (awesomely played) funk covers from The Meters (of course his Uncle Art was one of the Meters!) to James Brown to Sly and The Family Stone to Ray Charles to War...plus a mix of tunes old rock and roll tunes he has commonly covered for years and a couple of originals. He even did one of his 80s hits — by request, it clearly wasn’t on the setlist — "Not Just Another Girl", and the band got it together pretty quickly. (And I must say that it turned out to be one of the best things about this show (well maybe that or the 14 minute "Sex Machine"). A few of these songs from this setlist made it into the early Dumpstaphunk repertoire, and one or two of them still persist into their setlist to this day. This show was at a very very intimate bar (that I'd never been to before or since and I have little memory of) called The I Lounge, and it was promoted by my friend Shari Frank, who has been one of the people bringing great NOLA music to NYC for decades. So thanks to Shari for making sure I got to see Ivan in his pre-Dumpstaphunk days! If I recall, I had my mics right onstage (or very close) and this recording reflects the intimate nature of the show. It's very warm and up-close sounding. You'll be enveloped in the sound. And before I wrap this up, I've got to mention the players in his band on this night. Let’s start with the drummer, the famous Charley Drayton — he's a major record producer, drummer, and bassist (he was the drummer on the B52s' studio recording "Love Shack"), has played with Fiona Apple, Neil Young, Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, The Cult, Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Johnny Cash, and Iggy pop. He toured with Ivan in Keith Richards' X-Pensive Winos. The bassist Booker King has played with an incredibly diverse group of musicians: Carlos Santana, Angelique Kidjo, Femi Kuti, Billy Cobham, Kelis, Grant Green Jr., and Mary Wilson.
