View NotesDrivin n Cryin 1988-07-20 Metroplex Atlanta GA Acoustic show 1988 Alternative Democrat Convention 50 minutes Kevn Kinney - guitar Tim Nielson - bass, mandolin Jeff Sullivan - drums Buren Fowler - guitar, banjo In 1988, the Democrat Party presidential nominating convention was held in Atlanta GA at The Omni and the adjacent World Congress Center Also adjacent, well, a couple of blocks away, was the awesome, legendary club Metroplex. Owner Paul Cornwell opened the club to a gaggle of activists and events and billed it as the Alternative Convention. One of the highlights was an open air concert held in an empty lot next to the club...and the highlight of that was, of course, the Drivin n Cryin set. This was the first time I saw the whole band play an acoustic set together. I'd seen Kevn play acoustic solo and the band do some acoustic tunes during their shows, but never an entire acoustic show. They delivered a great set with nice versions of some of their acoustic standards, as well as acoustic versions of some of their kick-ass drivin tunes like Yes That's Me and Powerhouse. You get Tim on mandolin and Buren on banjo during Iron Mountain, brand new at the time. I like this tune but they never played it the way I hear it in my head, which is bluegrass style, at breakneck speed. They always played it slow...REAL slow. Jon Kincaid, WREK DJ legend and DNC historian, gets a shout out before Hey Landlord, which Kevn mis-introduces as Hail To The Paperboy, for some reason. Not Afraid To Die, one of my all time favorite acoustic DNC tunes is in there. They played Good Day Everyday somewhere in the middle but I missed it somehow. Enjoy also the sounds of my two year old daughter getting an alternative pre-school education and the rumble and horns of trains slowly rolling through the industrial environs.
