View NotesGuitarist extraordinaire Barry Richman has been a fixture of the Atlanta music scene for nearly two decades. Over the years I've known him, I've seen Barry play with many of my favorite musicians as well as with his own band - for a few months he was a member of Bruce Hampton's band, Planet Zambi and I saw him regularly. So I am not surprised at his technical
expertise or his ability to fit in with a band - the man is consummate professional, and there's no nicer guy in the business. Barry has sat in with Donna often, but this was the first time they had played together for an entire nignt and I had high expectations. Wow, what a show!
Donna said she wanted to play with Barry because she always learned something from him, but I saw Barry watching her just as much. Donna had a wonderful influence on Barry's playing and he fit into a beautiful, mellow groove. Several times Donna mentioned how wonderful his rhythm playing was in her songs. I can honestly say that this was the best I've ever heard
Barry play.. Hooray!
The first set started a little late with some sound problems and while Donna was setting levels, her band jammed with Barry on a completely improvisational soundcheck tune that was awesome - made up on the spot. It was great to hear Barry solo on so many blues tunes - he has such a great sound and fit in with Donna so well. He soared on Little by Little and
Baby Please. Then in the second set he played an astounding solo at the end of Don't Ask Why, before Donna's slide solo - I've never heard a guest player solo in that spot and it was unbelievable. Donna sat down to watch the fun as Barry led the band through Coltrane's Mr. PC, then came back for some more killer blues. I love this pairing and I really hope to see them share the stage again sometime soon. This is a truly great show.
