Lineage:
Neumann TLM170s(cardoid, FOB) -> Sonosax -> Teac DAP20 (16 bit, 48khz, EMPHASIS ON) Transfer: Sony R500->Sound Devices 722 Mastered: Soundforge Pro 10.0b - *All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits* Sample rate conversion 48khz to 44.1khz using iZotope 64-Bit SRC set higher than "Highest Quality" setting w/anti-alias filter. 24 bit file then processed with SOX 14.3.1 (as recommended, keeping the file at 24 bits during the processing) to remove pre-emphasis which was applied by the Teac A>D converter. Then back to Soundforge for volume normalization and finally then dithered back to 16 bits using using iZotope MBIT+ with Ultra noise shaping, High dither settings. Tracked in CDWav.
Taper Notes:
View NotesRecorded, Transferred, Mastered, and Tracked by Scott Bernstein (5/22-24/2010). Cleaned up sub-second dropouts in master recording in set 1 at: 8:19, 11:13, 11:19, 11:25, 11:35, 12:49, 12:48, 12:59 (there was a longer dropout here, partially only in one channel so there is a short period around this point where the show reverts to mono), 23:51. I think I was having issues with my battery pack for the Sonosax, which I eventually straightened out. * = w/Merl Saunders on keys and vocals + = w/Scott-ay on vocals ^ = w/Cabaret Diosa - Grant, Arturo One of the stage mics is distorted in the house PA mix for parts of set 1, track 2; the distortion goes away for a while and then comes back for a bit in Set 1, Track 4 Taper notes: Plugging along in my labor of love, here's BARN44, another entry into my New Orleans Jazzfest appreciation series. This is from one of my favorite bands at the time, Deep Banana Blackout. If you're not familiar with them, they were (and I guess sometimes still are) a Connecticut-based funk band with a horn section and a spunky female lead singer, Jen Durkin. They made a name for themselves at The Wetlands for playing long sets of original songs mixed in with many classic funk & blues covers (James Brown, P-Funk, The Meters, Janis Joplin, etc.), all of which is in evidence here. Of course they were perfect for the "play all night" atmosphere of the late-night jazzfest shows, having perfected doing exactly this at Wetlands. I can't recall exactly what time this show started, but if you listen closely you can hear the band mention early in the 2nd set that the sun was already coming out. And this is a LONG show even by their standards -- just under 100 minutes for the 1st set, and just over 100 minutes for the 2nd set. Wow! And it never lets up....no slow tunes, particularly in the 2nd set. They knew that if people were out so late, they had to keep things energetic. Thinking back, this might be one of the only times that I spent nearly as much time outside the show as I did inside -- it was BROILING inside the venue, and once you were hand-stamped you could come and go from the venue as you wished, and also clearly hear the music just in front of the venue, so there was a huge scene outside of people dancing to the music. My Jazzfest Appreciation series just keeps rolling and rolling. Look for more entries coming...... Enjoy!
