Taper Notes:
View Notes* = first live performance + = Dan was pretty iffy on these lyrics, but he makes up for it with a hilarious extemporaneous story in the middle of the song; the last few seconds are faded out due to a preamp battery death There are 3 short gaps in a few tracks due to pre-amp battery issues I was having on this night -- which have been closed up in tracks 10, 12, and 14 Additional musicians: Duke McVinnie - guitar, Merle the drum machine Richard Khuzami - various percussion Recorded by Scott Bernstein Transferred (5/5/2020), tracked (2/27/2023), mastered (10/10/2022-10/20/2023) and posted (11/10/2023) by Scott Bernstein Follow me on Twitter to track my postings of FREE live music and concert photography: http://www.twitter.com/scott_bernstein Or become a "fan" on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Scott-Bernsteins-Live-Music-Photos-Page/166706713365451 Photo credit: Meredith Jacobson Marciano Collection: New York in the 1970s through 9/11 https://www.villagepreservation.org/ia_image/nightingale-bar-213-second-avenue-northwest-corner-of-13th-st/ Taper Notes: This show was the third show in a weekly residency (dubbed "Experimental Wednesdays") that Dan played at the Nightingale Bar while he was living here in town in NYC for a bit. See my notes (here https://archive.org/details/danbern1998-12-02) included the first release from this run for details around the circumstances that led to Dan having an extended stay here in NYC during this time period, the history of the performance venue, and the backing musicians. This was a special near-Christmas (it was only 2 days away) show and Dan nods to the holiday, opening with a SPECTACULAR song "Before We Get The Meals" (that still sends chills down my spine -- I'm not sure if this was a one-off ad-libbed song or a composed song -- as I can't find evidence of it ever being played again), offset by the fun "Christmas" and an one-off encore of "Silent Night". Otherwise show is a nice mix of brand new tunes at the time and classic oldies: check out the premiere of "Dictator" -- a fun song which still holds up well. You can also hear Dan ask for some help in holding up the lyrics of Hillary because he didn't have a music stand. Check out this killer take of "Krautmeyer" in which Dan is a little iffy on the actual lyrics, but takes the song into a variety of unexpected places. "Estelle" is a song which is ALWAYS welcome in my book (and still my favorite song of Dan's). And the set-closing run of Swoosh -> Sex -> Suzanne -> Feel Like A Man is just about as perfect as a Dan Bern show can get. Highly recommend checking this one out! Note that some of the Dan Bern fans shared around CD-R versions of my recordings of this run just after the shows completed. This is a completely remastered version of the show and should surpass the original versions that circulated at the time. I continue to share this entire run of NYC Experimental Wednesdays at the Nightingale Bar in short order. Enjoy!
