See my notes (<a href="https://archive.org/details/danbern1998-12-02" rel="nofollow">here https://archive.org/details/danbern1998-12-02</a>) included the first release from this run for details around the circumstances that led to Dan having an extended stay here in NYC during this time period, the history of the performance venue, and the backing musicians. Things start out very nicely with a version of "I Need You" where the musicians really gel right off the bat (and, no drum machine). After a version of "I Don't Know Who I Am" that showcases Duke's guitar fireworks, we get the premiere of Dan's catchy commentary on the Clinton sex scandals -- "Hillary (Don't Suffer in Silence)" followed by what seems to have been the premiere of the excellent and somewhat mysterious "Monuments", and then a stunning debut performance of what may be Dan's most beautiful/romantic song -- "Wheatfield With Crows". After Dan takes a break while Duke plays one for the crowd, Dan goes into another (nearly flawless, after a false start in the wrong key -- and one minor lyrical flub) take on the new "Thanksgiving Day Parade" (premiered at the previous Experimental Wednesday). Then we get a great run through some killer lesser-played classics (Green On You, Feel Like a Man, One More Light, Run Away, King Of The World) -- wrapping the set up with a quick run-through of a sweet little Beatles number. In particular, this take on "King Of The World" has a very different but enjoyable feel due to the fact that they kept Merle at the same tempo through the whole mini set of songs. Dan wraps things up with a really outstanding encore take of "Lightning Jazz". All in all, a strong, comfortable show for Dan in front of a loving, respectful audience. Note that some of the Dan Bern fans shared around CD-R versions of my recordings of this run just after the shows completed. This is a completely remastered version of the show and should surpass the original versions that circulated at the time. I continue to share this entire run of NYC Experimental Wednesdays at the Nightingale Bar in short order. Enjoy!
