Neumann TLM-170 -> Sonosax SX-M2 -> Tascam DA-P1 (@16/48);Transfer: Sony R500->Sound Devices 722. Mastering in Soundforge Audio Studio 9.0c - volume normalization and 48->44.1 sample rate conversion with interpolation accuracy 4, anti-alias filter. All file manipulation in Soundforge done at 24 bits, then dithered back to 16 bits using highpass triangular dither algorithm with high pass contour noise shaping. Tracked in CDWav.

View Notes* = Performed by 12 year old kid, Matthew Bair + = end is sung off-mic Taper's comments: As part of my archive restoration series, I decided to dig deep -- back to the first time that I saw Dan headline his own show (I'd seem him once before in '97, opening for Ani DiFranco at Central Park Summerstage) -- at the legendary (and yet also infamous in some ways) Bottom Line. This show sounded pretty amazing but still took quite a bit of polishing to bring to its full glory. As you can hear, Dan seems to have been in a particularly mellow mood this night, as most of the versions of the songs are VERY laid back (even Hannibal, which often one of Dan's loudest) -- check out Chelsea Hotel, Estelle (where Dan's almost talking the lyrics over a few guitar strums), and True Revolutionaries.... all are the slowest, quietest versions I've ever heard. Anyway, what I did in the mastering on this one was generally bring up the volume of the songs and left the clapping between songs at the original volume (unless it was REALLY loud and needed to be attenuated a bit) and removed some occasional really loud claps when I could. Luckily (and Dan notes this a couple of times), the audience was virtually silent during the songs but enthusiastic in applauding between songs. I really liked the show at the time -- enough to get me to come back the next night for both the early AND late sets, despite the fact that Alan Pepper (the owner of the venue) REALLY did NOT want us to tape. Dan went to bat for us and worked it out so we could tape. In fact, in all of the times Dan wound up playing the Bottom Line and I went to see (and tape) him, Alan Pepper never eased up on us tapers. That guy was always a pain in the derriere. This is BARN4 -- my 4th installment of the "Bernstein Archive Restoration" project of transferring my DATs to .wav files.
