Still the same incredibly intimate, but hot, smoky, and dumpy Nightingale Bar, still LOTS of environmental noise (doors opening and closing, poolball breaks, cues dropping, ice being dumped out somewhere, and this time even the payphone in the venue ringing!), BUT much better sound in few ways -- there is a LOT less crowd chatter on this one -- I'm not sure if there were less people or they were more attentive; there is less intermittent distortion coming out of the PA (it happens only a few times over the course of this show whereas it happens a bit more often on the July show), the levels were much more consistent on my recording, and most importantly I had upgraded my mics at this point (I bought my TLM-170s in September). Anyway, onto the actual show -- this one is a lot less freewheeling than the previous one -- there was almost no interaction between Chris and the audience like there was in the July show....the crowd doesn't keep calling for more (though Chris himself asked a to extend the show a bit)...and there is just a lot less "craziness" in this show. On the other hand, we get a mini Fun Bunnies (Chris' pre-Spin Doctors band) set when Chris' best friend Ben Lewis sits in for 4 songs! (This reminds me that I do have a 1994 Fun Bunnies show in my collection for a future BARN!). Setlist wise, there are a many repeats from the previous show and (based on Chris' banter) a conscious effort to avoid Spin Doctors songs, but cool things that stand out -- "The Cuckoo" (an old folk song), "Catfish Blues" (old blues cover played on ukulele!), "The Girl Downstairs" (not sure I've ever heard this performed before or since), the always-welcome ancient Spins chestnut "Cop That The Robber", and the poetic "Eye Of The Needle". Enjoy!
