Take the impossible to categorize jazzy guitar/bassist Charlie Hunter, another adventurous guitarist -- Will Bernard, Scott Amondola (Charlie Hunter's great musical partner on drums for years) and a 3rd wildcard guitarist, John Schott and restrict their repertoire to jazz legend Theolnous Monk, funk legend James Brown, and lesser known blind jazz original Rashaan Roland Kirk (plus the occasional Prince and some random classic rock bits) -- often in ONE SONG AND add a huge dose of on-stage chemistry with the band members cracking jokes nonstop amongst themselves onstage and generally having a good time together -- and you get TJ Kirk (originally named "James T. Kirk" but they had to change their name due to potential legal action from the Star Trek trademark owners) -- with the T for Thelonious Monk, J for James Brown, and Kirk for Rashaan Roland.... This is a band that didn't last very long (though they did release 2 studio albums and one live album LONG after they broke up) and at the time I was already a big fan of Charlie Hunter. I eagerly attended with taping buddy Boris Lvovsky and his girlfriend at the time...and the Knitting Factory main stage was outfitted with round tables and seats -- which was unusual for the venue at the time -- so this was not a well attended show...and I'm not aware of any other time this band played NYC...and I've only ever seen 2 other TJ Kirk shows circulating. So this one NEEDS to get out there. For BARN159, I bring you some VERY rare and extremely adventurous music [only 18 years later ;)] in a show that is just as likely to get you grooving as it is to get you chuckling!
