View NotesMark Mullins - trombone Craig Klein - trombone Greg Hicks - trombone Bert Cotton - guitar Nori Naraoka - bass Alvin Ford, Jr. - drums This was a 1 hour opening set for Trombone Shorty and his band. You can download Trombone Shorty's set here: http://bt.etree.org/details.php?id=550116 Taper notes: This was a HUGE venue with a HUGE sound system -- it was amazing to hear the bones mixed with so much power behind them (and in true stereo -- you can really hear the drums and the different 'bones in distinct channels) -- in particular you can hear Bert's guitar and the drums mixed like a real rock and roll band! Unfortunately as you can hear, as an opening gig there were not a lot of people there during their set. When they started there was probably less than 100 people there, and more filtered in as the night went on, but being savvy New York concert-goers, most people knew about what time to get there to see Trombone Shorty when there was an opening act. That said, this is a great sounding recording, and the band BROUGHT it for sure, so that anybody who's never heard them before definitely left with a great impression -- a hyperspeed "Whipping Post" was an especially good call for the setlist and definitely got peoples' attention. In general they chose a set of more upbeat/rocking tunes to get the crowd's attention. One thing to note is a slightly new arrangement (in my estimation) of "Yer Blues" right before the verse -- there is a tasty little tempo change that I like a lot. Another thing to note is how Nori's awesome killer slap bass sounds through the huge sound system during Funky Brown Shorts!
