Not counting the previous year's opening set for Yo La Tengo in Hoboken, the last time Barbara Manning played in New York City proper was a set with her band the Go-Luckys at the long-since-shuttered Tonic, a month before 9/11. For her return engagement 13 years later, it was just Barbara, her shiny silver electric Gretsch, and her irrepressible voice, as part of a two-day mini-festival put on by Chickfactor magazine. Notwithstanding a couple of glitches, including an attempt at "Straw Man" that had to be delayed until she could locate the lyrics, it was a fun, intimate set that mixed her '90s-era material with some more recent songs ("Coy Tongue," "Better By Bounds"), and one that was warmly received by the Bell House crowd. This was mixed from two sources: a soundboard feed, plus CA-14 cardioid mics mounted on the back wall by the soundboard. Big thanks to Barbara and to Gail O'Hara of Chickfactor to helping set this up, and to Jeff and the Bell House for helping to set up the board feed; significantly fewer thanks to the two guys off to my right who wouldn't shut up their loud conversation, even after I went over and asked politely. (They're not too audible in the final mix, thankfully.) And if you've been wondering what Barbara's been up to since her last official release ("Enjoy the Lonely Time" from 2006), check out her essential new Bandcamp site (http://barbaramanning.bandcamp.com/), which offers digital downloads of an album's worth of new music, including the studio version of "Better By Bounds."
