SOUND QUALITY: A+/A - I prefer to think of this as an exceptionally-good AUD recording, rather than a merely-decent matrix. The original soundboard recording was definitely a monitor mix, with virtually no low-end to speak of. It adds clarity to all those lovely little synth squiggles, and means we can actually hear the lyrics to Benzaiten and the other vocal number of the nigh-- well, why spoil the surprise quite yet. There's some slight distortion in places, which - aside from a bit of bona-fide clipping in the beginning of the first track - I'm reasonably sure originates in the vocal mics themselves, but all in all, I like to think I redeemed myself for my subpar recording of last year's ferocious Richmond effort - and it wouldn't be possible without the help of Mr. JK, who was incredibly helpful about letting me plug into his board. (and subsequent offshoots) is a Japanese psychedelic band founded in 1995 by members of the Acid Mothers Temple soul-collective. The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with 4 core members and frequent vocal guests. The band have a reputation for phenomenal live shows, and releasing frequent albums on a number of international record labels, as well as the Acid Mothers Temple family record label which was established in 1998 to document the activities of the whole collective." - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia which every 14 year old has edited. BAND PAGE: http://www.acidmothers.com SHOW NOTES: As I'm sure we all know (and by "we all" I primarily refer to the "me, myself, and I" triumvirate), last year's Richmond Ride was a bit of a bumpy affair, with frustrating lows (arriving midway through the set and pulling a less-than-stellar recording of what I did capture) blended with awesome highs (an absolutely electric atmosphere and meeting some incredibly kind and generous people who fed and watered me and made the subsequent journey down to North Carolina possible). I'm pleased as punch to report that this year's Richmond Endeavour kept the highs and lost the lows - a journey that was smooth and uneventful (not to mention - most importantly - TIMELY!!), the best performance from the band I've seen on this tour (and, I'd venture, the best performance I've seen in quite some time), an excellent one-off opening act (Tasha Yar), an atmosphere that rivalled that of Johnny Brenda's and Ottobar, and - surprise of surprises - bumping into the same incredibly kind and generous people in the exact same parking lot - heck, the exact same spaces of the exact same parking lot - that I ran into last year. Performance-wise, I'll try to let the recording speak for itself for the most part. We get a SURPRISE SETLIST INSERTATION (Chinese Flying Saucer - wonder if this was the encore played at the seemingly-untaped Los Angeles show) and a SURPRISE SPECIAL GUEST (the legendary Cotton Casino), in addition to all the elements that have made this a very, very fun tour to follow (I cannot gush enough about the reworked Cometary and the jam that it segues from). A (hopefully) great recording of an inarguably great night - I only hope it's as fun to listen to as it was to tape. REQUESTS & REMINDERS: Do not sell this recording. Do not buy this recording.
