The band is led by guitarist Kawabata Makoto and early in their career featured many musicians but by 2004 the line-up had coalesced with 4 core members and frequent vocal guests. SHOW NOTES: Well, let's get this out of the way: This was not the greatest of shows. It certainly WAS nice to be making the relatively simple trek to Baltimore, rather than a six hour schlep through the traffic-soaked badlands of Northern Virginia - but, at least with the simple Baltimore v. Chapel Hill sample set, there seems to exist a distinct correlation twixt amount of bullshit needed to get to the show, and amount of shitter kicked by the show - though, without giving anything away, let me restate that this correlation only seems to exist when considering these two shows in isolation! Dunno if the band was up against a curfew, or was drained from the North Carolina > Balty commute, or was expecting a second encore, or just had one too many Natty Bohs, but this show was very brief, clocking in at a grand total of one hour and seven minutes. There's also a certain rushed aimlessness - to my ears, at least, and borne out in the tape - as if each individual member of the band is collectively forcing themselves into a relaxed state, so as to wait for a moment of sync - a moment of sync that, if it even ever comes at all, takes everyone by such surprise that the connection is dropped just as suddenly as it is formed. "Prefunctory" isn't exactly the best word to describe this, nor is "rushed", but there is a certain casual - yet briskly so - attitude towards this show that I've yet to hear from the Acid Mothers. The end result is almost like a show played for friends, rather than for an audience. And I can't think of an audience better described as "friends" than the Ottobar crowd - both Acid Mothers shows I've seen there were packed shoulder-to-shoulder. Bottom line: If most Acid Mothers shows are an acid trip joyride on the tail of Halley's Comet with a hand-selected gaggle of inter-galactic beauty-maidens, this show is a bowl of marijuana and a room temperature beer on a hazy summer night in a buddy's backyard. There's still plenty of enjoyment to be had, but it's definitely not outer space. And, lest this seem like a dour, negative review, let me restate that this is by no means a BAD show. If you like the Acid Mothers, you'll like this. If you like slightly distorted low-ends, you'll like this.
