For the 232nd entry in by BARN series, I present to you a band truly at the height of their prowess. In 1994, GSW could really do no wrong when they performed. And this recording proves that point. On the night of my 24th birthday, I traveled back to the NJ shore (I'd been living in NYC just over a year at this point), to the mecca of Bruce Springsteen -- the legendary Stone Pony, to see my then-favorite band, God Street Wine! I was definitely there with taper buddies and fellow Winos Bob Mischka, and (I believe) Geoff Tischman as well. I know that there is already a soundboard recording of this posted to archive.org, but you are all going to LOVE this beautiful audience capture we made on this night. The Pony is a small venue with a loud sound system; the mix is solid, and the crowd (as a NJ crowd will tend to be) is boisterous, but that all adds to the beauty of this recording. On to the music, here are some notes I took while listening back to the recording (unfortunately I didn't take many notes during the 2nd set): MVP of the show: Tomo! He played like Animal from The Muppets on this night, raising the bar for the entire band, driving the car from the back seat. Brand New Pussycat - Killer way to open a show! Super high energy and funky/slinky; love those double entendre lyrics. Cheap Utah Blues - Down and dirty; Epiphany and 6:15 make for a truly lovely mid-set pairing. Molly - is guitar extravaganza followed by a huge organ solo, and lowdown bass. Crashing Down — straight ahead FIRE, super high energy with an Allman Bros-esque guitar duet for the jam. Crazy Iranian is a jazzy instrumental that was not performed a ton and unfortunately has very un-PC title would probably be verboten these days. Mid 2nd set, things really really get cooking with the highlight of the show: Goodnight Gretchen into Electrocute into Hellfire. Wow, you've gotta hear this. The transition from Electrocute into Hellfire is absolutely incendiary. The band then really takes things down a notch for a breather with their ode to the women of Westchester, NY (which was always kind of a rarity, and my first time hearing it), only to bring things roaring back again for Tina's Down and Nightingale to close the set. A beautiful Epilog ends the night with the band dropping in some verses of Madonna's "Express Yourself" that I still remember vividly 28 years later -- it was a beautiful moment. Do yourself a favor and soak in this show. Enjoy!
