View NotesCharles Atkins & The Blues Boys originals: Tracks 10, 21-23 Players: Charles Atkins - keyboards and vocals The Blues Boys Larry Laseur - harmonica, backup vocals Harty Wiedemann - guitar, vocals $ Tom Henning - guitar Bernie Powers - bass, vocals + Stretch Evans - drums Notes: The setup: Downtown Tallahassee, across from the State Capitol and City Hall, up the hill and up the stairs to a 2nd floor restaurant. Dinner Time - so Charles & the boys were asked to keep the volume down - way down - thru dinner. After dinner they could crank it up some. The sound: To keep the volume down, the boys decided not to mic the guitar or harp. So Harty you can hear a little of sometimes; Larry might as well have been in the kitchen. Mostly you hear Charles on the Casio, Bernie on bass and Stretch playing drums. It starts off so quiet that there was barely any signal on tape. The recording gets better after Kiddio but by the 2nd half when they pick it up with faster numbers, well, it's a sorry mix in some places. Bernie's songs come out OK because there are backup vocals to fill in. Oh, I forgot about Bernie and Reputation, how he liked to insert new verses; that's what he's laughing about at one point. Unfortunately for Harty with no guitar fills, he's pretty much hung out on a thin line on his 2 tunes near the end, but give him credit for stepping up when Charles needed a break. The results: great vocals, the slow songs are good; some better than others. The format allowed Charles to do some songs he normally would not sing, like Lou Rawls' Walking Cane, or put a different emphasis on others. We did some more even quieter dinner gigs, a 3 piece with Charles, Larry & Harty, but it was always kinda uncomfortable and stressful for everyone. And as you can see from the flyer, we did get back to Andrew's a couple more times, but alas, no recordings of those. Nov 2007 "And there is still a lot of energy as they close with Little Bit of Love." Enjoy! - SCopeland
